Genesis 25 – The Twin Rivalry

In this chapter, Abraham died. Ismael and Isaac buried him together at Sarah’s tomb.
There is a short story of Abraham’s other wives and family and a section dedicated to Ishmael’s genealogy.

Rebecca was barren and Isaac prayed, so God opened her womb and told her the prophecy of the twin inside her belly.

Esau grew up as a hunter and Isaac liked him more, Jacob was a homy boy and Rebekah liked him more. One day Esau went back for hunting, hungry, thus he sold his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of red stew that Jacob cooked.

In the opening, the writer made sure to conclude that God blessed Abraham to the end and he led his life to the fullest.

Also mentioned that Abraham ensured he sent away all his other children to ensure Isaac was the only heir. Reading from NT as metaphor, this is a symbol of exclusivity of inheritance in Christ.

A section is dedicated to Ishmael showing his importance and how he finished his life well, and the 12 tribes, number of order and completeness.

Also emphasized that Isaac and Ishmael buried Abraham together, but not other children. Isaac stayed near Beer Lahai Roi also. All seemed to indicate the reconcilation between Isaac and Ishmael. And oh, Abraham was buried together with Sarah.

The story of Esau and Jacob is the source of many metaphors in NT.

One is about the divine election, God’s sovereignity to choose.

Another is how Esau despised what is glorious and instead was godless and later regret it (Heb 12). He fell short of grace for he rejected the grace.

Take away:

Abraham had his ups and downs but God blessed him to the end and all his life he is in relationship with God.

Hebrews 12:16-17 – See that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son. Afterward, as you know, when he wanted to inherit this blessing, he was rejected. Even though he sought the blessing with tears, he could not change what he had done.
